NCJW History in Brief

December 16, 2019 By Christine Heller

National

From 1893 to the present, NCJW has continued its dedication to community service in the following ways:

  • Met new immigrants at the docks and assisted them in their resettlement
  • Established Sabbath schools in communities without synagogues
  • Created Golden Age Clubs for seniors
  • Joined the Meals on Wheels program (first Jewish organization to do so)
  • Conducted a comprehensive study of childcare
  • Participated in studies on juvenile justice and mothers in the workplace
  • Protects a woman’s right to reproductive choice; through NCJW’s BenchMark campaign, we are the leading Jewish organization educating, mobilizing, and advocating on the importance of this fundamental freedom
  • Speaks out when anti-choice judges are nominated for lifetime seats on the federal bench

Atlanta Section

In 1895, the Atlanta Section was born and embraced cutting edge community needs:

  • Launched the Children’s Dental Clinic
  • Resettled immigrants from Europe and later from the Soviet Union
  • Adopted the Children’s ward at Grady Hospital
  • Opened a Day Treatment Center for emotionally disturbed people
  • Established the Golden Age Employment Service and Information and Referral Service
  • Held Tay-Sachs screenings
  • Launched the Family Outreach Center for Prevention of Child Abuse
  • Opened the Louis Kahn Group Home (now the Cohen Home)
  • Continued to sponsor the Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy (AJCL), with over 100 volunteers in nine Title 1 elementary schools
  • Purchased classic novels for the Language Arts Program for the students of Temima, the Richard and Jean Katz High School for Girls in Atlanta
  • Working with Tahirih Justice Center to support the needs of the immigrant women and girls in Atlanta fleeing violence in their home countries

Israel

Responding to the educational needs of the country, NCJW:

  • Sent toys and educational materials through the “Ship a Box” program
  • Awarded over 200 fellowships to Israeli leaders for graduate study in the U.S.
  • Dedicated Hebrew University High School in Jerusalem, which was both a high school and a teacher training and demonstration center
  • Built the NCJW Research Institute for Innovation and Education.  Its Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program is used around the world today.

Sponsored with Tel Aviv University the NCJW Women and Gender Studies Program, the first undergraduate degree-granting program of its kind in the Middle East.

Through the decades, NCJW’s programs in Israel reflect the social justice issues being addressed in the United States, including improving literacy, helping children at risk, and working on domestic violence and women’s rights.

Driven by a commitment to social action and community service, NCJW women are
